Over the next few days I am going to be talking about the best covers I have ever heard. Hope you all know your music history.
10) Deer Tick - What Kind of Fool am I
This cover of one of my favorite Sinatra tunes is by no means better than the original. It is however, VERY different. The lead singer's rough Booze-soaked voice, while not anywhere near as good as Farnkie's, fits the song very well. I was very impressed. I recommend it to anyone that loves a good country tune. Oh did I forget to mention they were a country band? Yeah, don;t let that discourage you.
9) The Flaming Lips - If I Only had a Brain
That's right folks, The Flaming Motherfucking Lips. Covering the Wizard of Oz. Who that this was a good idea? I would like to shake their hand. To be honest, the cover sounds remarkably like the original. Only with a dash more awesome. it has just enough of that "insanity" that the Lips bring to all of their songs. However if you don't like 50's pop, you probably won't like this one.
8) Cake - I Will Survive
One of my favorites on the list. This cover makes me laugh endlessly. John McCrea was quoted as saying "We never meant to play this song as a joke. We take it very seriously." Uh hu... if you say so john, if you say so. Seriously though, the cover is good. It's the first on the list that is easily better than the original. Much better.
More tomorrow, Juju.
